The Village of Montgomery will hold a series of open house events to share info and obtain feedback on a draft Unified Development Ordinance
Join CMAP and the Village of Montgomery for one of two virtual open houses about the village's Unified Development Ordinance. CMAP is supporting this project through the Local Technical Assistance program. The open houses are on Tuesday, December 15, at 7:00 p.m., and Thursday, December 17, at 10:00 a.m.
With help from CMAP's Local Technical Assistance (LTA) program, the Village of Montgomery and local stakeholders have embarked on a community-based process to update and modernize the Village's Zoning and Subdivision Ordinances to create a UDO. The planning process aligns the Village's development regulations, land use practices, and vision for the community with its adopted Comprehensive Plan. Specific topics to be addressed through this project include land use; off-street parking; landscaping; sign requirements; subdivision standards; and updates to the zoning districts and bulk regulations.

Kane County Planning Awards

Kane County's 2020 Virtual Planners Forum recognizes the achievements of planning practitioners and projects
The Kane County Planners Annual Holiday Forum moved online this year, continuing the tradition of recognizing planning achievements and professionals serving the region's communities. The Forum has long served as a discussion platform to address planning projects or topics impacting the region. This year's Forum featured two ongoing planning efforts: CMAP working with the Village of Burlington to develop a new Comprehensive Plan and updates on Kane County's next Long Range Transportation Plan.
The Forum recognized Montgomery Community Development Director, Rich Young, as the 2020 Planner of the Year for his extensive and distinguished service. Prior to leading the Village of Montgomery's Development Department, Rich also served as Sugar Grove's Development Director for nearly six years. Among his noted achievements includes the creation and administration of the Montgomery Development Fund and the corresponding Downtown Mill District Incentive Grant Program.

The City of Aurora accepted the 2020 Plan of the Year Award for its Sustainability Plan. The plan was recognized as a citizen-initiated, forward- thinking document which sets innovate goals, metrics, and action plans for achieving a sustainable community vision. It also sets ambitious goals for renewable sources of energy and waste reduction initiatives.
This year the Planners Forum created a new award category which recognizes planning efforts and individuals that have left a generational impact on their communities and the practice of planning. The Impact on Planning and Legacy Award posthumously honored Charles Hall, a Batavia resident who served as the highest ranking African American in the US Census Department in 1935.
An Impact on Planning and Legacy Award was also issued on behalf of Kane County's Conceptual Land Use Strategy (adopted in 1994) and Land Resource Management Plan (adopted in 1996). The plans were distinguished for advancing sustainable land use strategies, aggressive open space policies, and strong emphasis on municipal cooperation.

Interest Grows for Biking, Walking
Pandemic draws attention to planning opportunities for increased biking and walking in communities
As residents show increased interest in biking and walking during the pandemic, communities can create temporary accommodations now while planning for long-term improvements. Learn about the steps communities can take to support and maintain residents' interest in biking and walking in the years ahead.
As the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning previously shared, important work is being done to increase facilities for bicyclists through pop-up bike lanes and other temporary changes. Chicago recently installed protected bike lanes using a lower-cost barrier to separate bicyclists from car travelers. Metra also has made it easier for cyclists to bring their bikes on board with a new dedicated bike car and by easing rush hour restrictions.
In Kane County the City of Aurora, Downtown Neighborhood Association of Elgin, City of Batavia and Village of Montgomery have partnered with the Kane County Division of Transportation to launch the Fox Valley Bike Share System.
